Default Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty's postmodernism and its meta narrative

Metal Gear Solid 2 was released on November 12th, 2001. Still to this day, in 2014, people are still talking about why the game is the way it is.

Now to people unfamiliar with the game that may sound strange. For fans however, its an all too real memory. To anyone who have played the first Metal Gear Solid on the Playstation you would know what was to be expected from a sequel. What we got was the polar opposite... The fun exciting simplistic story of the first game was replaced by an over complicated and confusing story. The iconic star of the game Solid Snake was playable for about one hour of the 10+ hour game, who was then replaced by a girlyman with flowing blonde hair. And that is barely scratching the surface. I'll let the videos explain below, as I don't see the point of creating a wall of text for a thread that may even get no replies at all. I do not know how many MGS fans are on this site.

But as the game constantly reminds you while playing it, nothing is what it seems. And all these changes were put there purposely.

Here are some videos that do a great job of explaining.

I've actually never played MGS2 before (Actually, I've only played the first and MGS V Ground Zeros) but I love the MGS series. I just received the MGS Legacy Collection so I plan on playing it through completely during the summer.

100% Completed Ground Zeroes about 2 weeks ago. I've been a fan since MGS1 came out. I was in kindergarden when I started playing the series, thank you Pizza Hut demo discs! Thats awesome to hear Faint. I'd start with MGS1, its gonna be a pretty big difference in gameplay mechanics compared to GZ. You won't see the GZ type mechanics really start to form until MGS4. But trust me, the story and gameplay will pull you in and never let go. Easily my favorite game series.

Im super jealous you get to play through them all for the first time.

From a quick glance its a short game even for the $30 dollar price tag. But if you're like me and want to put the time in to 100% the game, the $30 dollars makes it a steal. Theres 5 side missions, in other words the replay ability is very good. Apart from that, the game looks, plays and feels amazing. It still has that Metal Gear feel, even with all the new additions.

When you take all that into consideration when thinking about The Phantom Pain, the game will probably be nothing less than amazing. The time period in the MGS canon that this game takes place during is probably the most important of the entire series. We get to see that change of good Big Boss to the evil Big Boss we know him as from Metal Gear through MGS4.

Oh by the way Faint, the way the games are numbered doesn't necessarily mean one story happens after the other. It looks more like this:
MGS3 -> MGSPW -> Ground Zeroes -> Phantom Pain -> MG -> MG2 -> MGS1 -> MGS2 -> MGS4

Yeah, I'm trying to get 100% on Ground Zeroes as well. I think you kind of misunderstood me (probably with how I worded my sentence) but the only games that I have played in the MGS series are MGS1 and Ground Zeroes. With that being said, I can't wait to play through them all.

Watching this moment in the game, it really amazes me this game was made in 2001. So ahead of its time.

Spoiler!
