Thanks for the reply myzo. That's interesting.

Here's the thing, I definitely don't need to lose any more weight. I'm 5'11" and have dropped from 215 a year ago to 165 now. So should I just start working my abs hard to build up the muscles there? Like I said the top ones are already becoming visible, but man the tiny little flab on my stomach just irks me.

Oh, more info I can provide: I have about 1850 calories a day. I could definitely cut back on carbs, but even with what I eat I'm not eating the full "daily allowance" of them.

yeah loosing any more weight is just gunna make you skinny as fuck.

i am your height (5'10") and sitting at about 190 when I get to the gym after work in the afternoon.

I would say bulk up about 10lbs. that sounds like a lot, but your not going to look fat 10lbs heavier. you will loose what abs you have, but your going to build muscle. and you can do it slowly. gain weight over the next couple of months and then see if you wanna cut again to see abs.

Intriguing. I have never considering doing any sort of gaining. This is probably due to the fact that I have always been chubby until this recent weight loss, so gaining was always something I was trying to avoid haha.

Cool, let me think it over some and do some reading about it. If I decide to pursue that I will certainly come back in here and ask for help as it's not something I've done before. Thanks myzo.

Stobs, I think the fact that you implement physical activity into your life is something that has really helped in developing your desire to change yourself (referring to the awareness thread). It`s making me think that I might be interested in doing more in terms of working out in order to provide some form of catharsis to my body and thus helping me get my priorities straight.

In regards to the row discussion.

I enjoy dumbell rows better, but my hands are too damn small to do the 130's at my gym, and the rest is too easy, so I do pendlay rows.

same. except im not strong enough to 130s anyway lol. but i think pendlay rows are way more badass anyway

Lower abs are stubborn, but you need to put some muscle on that frame before it matters. FWIW I am 5'8", weigh more than you, and still have visible abs.

Body fat gets tricky when you're so lean with such little lean mass, as your body would rather not look more like a holocaust victim than it already likely does.

Seriously, stop worrying about your abs. I know it's somewhat of a milestone for a former fatty, but it's not something most people give nearly as much of a shit about as you may think.

This. I've been skinny and athletic my entire life, so my abs have always been visible. I've had a 6-pack, but it didn't matter because it didn't look right with the rest of my 5'10 145-150lbs body. In the past 3 months I've ate more than I ever have (still healthy, just more), worked out, and now I'm sitting at around 160 (should be more but I took some breaks during the holidays). My abs aren't as defined as they used to be but the rest of my body looks so much better that I could care less. I look more full and healthier than ever before.

Also, I can tell that my abs have gotten stronger with the rest of my body. The need to stabilize my core in all the different compound lifts I'm doing has made them stronger than just doing crunches, and adding a couple of other ab exercises in to develop muscle like Russian Twists doesn't hurt either.

I think you should strive to improve your overall strength and body shape instead of just focusing on the abs. The "achievement" of having abs is a superficial one. You'd benefit yourself much more by gaining overall strength and making the rest of your body look great, the abs will come.

Woah, just woke up and hadn't expected any more responses. I appreciate it guys.

@ThanatoZ: I think you're probably right about there being a correlation between the two changes.
Not to mention, whenever I get stressed nowadays I immediately want to go for a run. (Clear my head, plus get some feel good endorphins, I'd guess.)
In the past, I used to just get high when I was stressed. Which was really only delaying the stress, not dealing with it in a positive manner.

@Davo: I think you're right, it's more of a milestone than anything. I have always wanted abs, and now it seems like it's quite within reach. On the other hand, almost nobody will ever see them because how often am I shirtless around people? Never, really.
Anyways, thank you for bringing the root of the desire to my attention. To be honest, I hadn't really stopped to think about it.

To backtrack a bit: I don't take preworkout. I try to go into the gym as calm and relaxed as possible, honestly, and to that end I watch ASMR videos before I go. I also don't get psyched up at all, save for one or two sets a month. I have noticed that building strength in such a calm state--intensely focused but not agitated or excited--pays off when I do need to get psyched up to make a PR.

I don't forego mental/physical excitement, but I also don't force it or stimulate it beforehand, usually, except occasionally so I still remember how to do it and how to work within it.
