I think the last time I saw a HDD that did not have SMART on it's onboard firmware was back in 2001. SMART needs to be enabled in the mainboard BIOS to be able to read the error codes (if any).

Since you dont seem to want to use a professional version of Everest (which is about as easy to find as a 14 year old troll on the internet) alternatively you can use a freeware utility.

Its pretty basic, fairly simple and straightforward. Enable SMART in BIOS (if not enabled), review the error codes and thats about it.

I've coached 60 year olds over the phone on how to do this. If they can do it, you can.

What is happening with your HDD is this.

The OneTouch series of Maxtor external drives use a proprietary onboard micro operating system that is stored on the HDD itself (meaning - the actual platters/dataspace). Usually the micro-OS is stored on a drive's onboard firmware. By firmware, this means actual physical IC hardware that is seperate from, but onboard, the hard drive. The drive does have standard buffer and interrupt control on the hardware level, just like any other hard drive, however.

Since this drive relies on data integrity for the critical sectors on which the micro OS is stored, partial damage to these sectors will result in a general failure of the micro OS (sometimes called the "drive BIOS" "drive ROM" or "hdd I/O").

In summary, the drive's onboard emulative onboard OS is now deteriorated to the point where it cannot even respond to standard SMART code requests from your computer's mainboard BIOS, much less sustain accelerated read/write states (falling back to discreet r/w's).
There is no solution for this problem, excepting hardware replacement.

Consider buying a more robust external HDD with onboard firmware/micro OS instead of the cheaper emulative solution that you have now.

My dad bought like 5 of these...

he should really do his research before he fucks himself and I over like this.

I read like 500 reviews on Amazon saying that it was a really crappy external.

Great. Now I've lost all my montages, my old files, and my backup of this computer.

Damn you, Seagate/Maxtor. Damn you.

Meh, Christmas spirit.

Anyway, I was practicing in Sony Vegas w/ Phurion's practice clips, and his clips are stored on my external. As soon as I was going to test the render, Vegas failed on me, and since I forgot to save, my project was f..ked.

I immediately raged and dove for the first paper bag I could get my hands on so I could control my hyperventilating.

I need a new computer.

I know..... it was the external's fault for it failing, though.

I think it has finally bricked, though.

I am gonna get so pissed if my dad blames it on me.

he's going to dispute the multiple negative (like around 100) reviews on Amazon and say that "ohh it doesn't draw power from usb making it better than other external hard drives" and force me to pay for a new one.

Oh, the agony.
